Born in Soviet controlled Ukraine, Vlasta Smola learned early that perfection was the baseline expectation. Internalizing that drive for excellence, she now channels it into her incredibly-detailed paintings. Sometimes the goal is simply to reflect an exquisite feeling, through often it is far more complex, involving the careful weaving of modern myths of her own devising, or taking those of old and reinterpreting them through a fresh lens. Working with impossibly thin brushes, she pores over each detail, breathing life and mystery into her subjects one minute stroke at a time.
